Dry, Itchy, Cracking Skin

Can you imagine what it's like to live day to day when your skin hurts? When something as simple as opening a jar or putting on clothes is painful? Or you can't sleep because your skin is itching so bad?! This is the reality for far too many people. Medical treatments for most of these are really not appealing; steroid creams, immune suppressants, and other harsh medications that have side effects on the rest of the body.

The skin is our first line of defense. It forms a complete barrier between us and the rest of the world, designed to keep out pathogens, dirt and everything else in our environment. So when the skin is sick, it compromises the rest of the body.

When I see someone with a skin condition, there are several other areas I look at as well. Digestion and respiratory issues are often linked to skin problems. In fact I haven't seen a person with skin problems that hasn't had an underlying issue. That is because the skin is the body's biggest organ. It is also one of the easiest pathways for the body to detoxify and express imbalances. A problem with the skin is an outward expression of an inward illness.

Homeopathic medicine excels at treating eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions. That is because homeopathic treatment looks at the body as a whole. Each symptom plays a part in understanding the imbalance in the body and how to treat it.  The skin can be dry or scaly, thick or weepy,  cracking and bleeding, itchy or not. Some are worse after washing, some are worse in bed or when over heated. Some have only a few spots, some skin conditions spread and change places. Each of these conditions is very important when choosing the right remedy to help the skin heal.

Here are just a few homeopathic remedies to treat and heal the skin:

all removed to comply with the government’s censorship of promoting natural health products. Demand a repeal of Bill 47 sections 500-504. see www.nhppa.org for more information

While these remedies work to give relief to you skin problems, it's essential to address the underlying issues that caused the skin issues in the first place. This often means correcting digestion, some detoxification and other supports to help the body heal. This healing is crucial or the skin conditions will continue to came back or regress deeper into the body to affect another body system. Regression is why we often see the pattern of first eczema, then asthma, then allergies or digestive problems in so much of the population. If the skin problem is properly treated initially (with homeopathy and nutrition), then the illness doesn't go deeper into the body.

Now that you have corrected your skin problems, how do you keep your skin beautiful?

The skin is your biggest organ. It works hard to keep the bad stuff out and let the good stuff in. What you put on your skin really matters, it becomes a part of you. You won't see me buying expensive skin creams laden with chemicals, preservatives and all kinds of nastiness. My skin routine is simple: if I can't eat it, I won't put it on my skin. For natural skin creams and products that I whole-heartedly recommend visit Kelsey at Potions or Pearl and Candace at Living Well Whole Foods and More.

Want to know the real secret to keeping your skin healthy? Nourish it from the inside. Eat healthy fats and stay hydrated. Eating a diet that is well balanced and includes avocados, nuts and seeds, coconut oil, sesame oils, virgin olive oil and other healthy fats will keep your skin healthy, moisturized and reduce signs of aging. Unhealthy and rancid fats (ie: fast food) will age your skin. Simple hydration is an easy way to ensure your skin will stay healthy looking longer. I recommend 1.5 - 3 litres of water filtered per day, depending on your body's needs.
