Hormones, Symphonies and Seeds

Do you suffer from any of the following?

  • weight problems, slow metabolism
  • low energy/fatigue
  • infertility, low libido
  • insomnia/ wakefulness
  • PMS
  • mood swings
  • depression, sadness, anxiety
  • excessive hunger and food cravings
  • irregular body temperature, excessive sweating
  • hair loss
  • poor mineral absorption

Hormone imbalance may be the cause.

Your endocrine system is like a orchestra, so many little parts, each one vitally important to balancing the music of your life. As soon as one part gets out of tune,  it can throw the whole symphony off, the other instruments loose their place or their timing.  Small problems can become life altering.

Seed cycling is a good place to start when addressing sex hormone imbalances. However if this is not enough, homeopathic medicine may be the right fit for you. Homeopathic medicines can act on every part of the endocrine system. Homeopathy can strengthen organs, increase or decrease hormone production and increase mineral absorption.

Other hormone imbalances can be caused by a variety of factors including toxicity, stress, age, mal-absorption and medication. These factors will need to be considered when designing a restorative program for you. Most hormone related problems such as PCOS, Diabetes, Adrenal fatigue, PMS, Menopause discomforts, hyper- or hypo- thyroid, can all be helped with homeopathic medicines and diet. Seed Cycling

I LOVE to use food in place of medicines whenever possible.

Seed cycling is a simple and often very effective method of balancing the sex hormones. I usually recommend at least 2 months of seed cycling to see good results, however some people may notices positive changes in just a few weeks.

For women:

Seed cycling is simple. You start Part 1 on the first day of your period or on the new moon for those that are not menstruating. For 2 weeks you add 2 tbsp of pepitas (raw pumpkin seeds) and 1 tsp of flaxseed oil* to your diet each day.

Part 2 begins 2 weeks later or on the full moon for those not menstruating. For 2 weeks you add 2 tbsp of raw sunflower seeds and 1 tsp of sesame oil* to your diet each day.

In females seed cycling can reduce premenstrual pain, regulate the menstrual cycle, increase fertility, reduce menopausal symptoms and help with PCOS (Poly cystic ovarian syndrome).

Why it works: These oils and seeds help balance the estrogen and progesterone parts of the menstrual cycle. The oils are also anti inflammatory and help support detoxification and regulation.

For Men:

Men can seed cycle too! Men can follow the moon cycle, start Part 1 on the new moon with 1/4 cup of raw unsalted nuts (almonds, cashews, brazil nuts, pecans, walnuts) and 1 tsp of virgin olive oil.

Part 2 starts on the full moon and includes adding 2 tbsp of pepitas (raw pumpkin seeds) and 1 tsp of sesame oil.

These nuts, seeds and oils will increase essential minerals and fatty acids needed to regulate and increase testosterone production, which in turn increases wellness, sex drive and heart health.

*When buying oils, please look for organic cold pressed oils stored in dark bottles and refrigerate after opening. This will keep your oils fresh longer.

Hormone Balancing Carrot Salad

This is one of my favourite summer salads. It's easy and very versatile, you can swap out ingredients and change the flavours. All measurements are approximate and can be altered to suit your tastes. Use the freshest, high quality ingredients you can find/afford. Organic is best whenever possible.

This recipe makes about 6 cups of salad and can be eaten immediately, but is better if served after being refrigerated for a few hours to allow the flavours to blend. YOu can top it with additonal seeds and nuts. This lasts about 1 week in the fridge before it starts to get soft and mushy.

  • 3-4 cups of broccoli slaw (or shredded broccoli)
  • 4-5 large carrots shredded
  • 1/4 cup hemp and/ or chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup additional seeds (sunflower seed and /or pepitas)
  • 1/3 cup dried fruit (if desired) raisins, cranberry, cherry
  • 1-2 tbsp of oil (sesame, flaxseed, olive oil, avocado oil)
  • 1 Tbsp vinegar (I prefer apple cider vinegar, but I've also used herbal vinegars, and rice vinegar)
  • 1 Tbsp raw honey or maple syrup (to sweeten it if desired) optional
  • dash of cinnamon

Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl and refrigerate for a few hours before enjoying.

*For those that are Seed Cycling, use the oil and seeds that correspond to your cycle. For example, if you are female in week 1 of your cycle you would add 1/2 cup of pepitas and 1 tbsp of flaxseed oil to your salad. You can also top your serving with additional oil and seeds to make sure you are getting your daily allowance.
